Water is critical for socio-economic development, healthy ecosystems, and for human survival, that it becomes one of the cores of sustainable development. Therefore, water is vital for reducing the global burden of disease and also improving the health, welfare, and productivity of populations. As a Muslim, water conservation is an important part as explained in the Koran and the Hadiths:
Do the unbelievers not see that the heavens and the earth were joined together, and We split them apart? And We made from water every living thing. Will they not believe? [Al-Anbiya : 30]
And We sent down from the sky water in proper quantity, and We settled it in the ground, and We are able to take it away. [Al-Mu’minun : 18]
Prophet Muhammad pbuh saying: “Muslims have [a] common share in three things: grass (pasture), water and fire (fuel)” (Abu Dawood 3470).
Water is not only vital for individuals but all living things on earth and it is a finite and irreplaceable resource that is fundamental to human well-being. It is renewable if well managed. Today, billions of people live in river basins where depletion through use exceeds natural recharge, and 5 years later it may see two-thirds of the world’s population living in water-stressed countries. MILI has committed to continue to play a role in water conservation both by conducting the research in water sustainability and conservation and by helping water-scarce people.
